⁷ Dear friends,^(A) I am not writing you a new command but an old one, which you have had since the beginning.^(B) This old command is the message you have heard. ⁸ Yet I am writing you a new command;^(C) its truth is seen in him and in you, because the darkness is passing^(D) and the true light^(E) is already shining.^(F)

⁹ Anyone who claims to be in the light but hates a brother or sister^[a](G) is still in the darkness.^{(H) 10} Anyone who loves their brother and sister^[b] lives in the light,^(I) and there is nothing in them to make them stumble.^{(J) 11} But anyone who hates a brother or sister^(K) is in the darkness and walks around in the darkness.^(L) They do not know where they are going, because the darkness has blinded them.^(M)

Reasons for Writing

On Not Loving the World

¹⁵ Do not love the world or anything in the world.^(Y) If anyone loves the world, love for the Father^[c] is not in them.^{(Z) 16} For everything in the world—the lust of the flesh,^(AA) the lust of the eyes,^(AB) and the pride of life—comes not from the Father but from the world. ¹⁷ The world and its desires pass away,^(AC) but whoever does the will of God^(AD) lives forever.

Warnings Against Denying the Son

¹⁸ Dear children, this is the last hour;^(AE) and as you have heard that the antichrist is coming,^(AF) even now many antichrists have come.^(AG) This is how we know it is the last hour. ¹⁹ They went out from us,^(AH) but they did not really belong to us. For if they had belonged to us, they would have remained with us; but their going showed that none of them belonged to us.^(AI)

²⁰ But you have an anointing^(AJ) from the Holy One,^(AK) and all of you know the truth.^{[d](AL) 21} I do not write to you because you do not know the truth, but because you do know it^(AM) and because no lie comes from the truth. ²² Who is the liar? It is whoever denies that Jesus is the Christ. Such a person is the antichrist—denying the Father and the Son.^{(AN) 23} No one who denies the Son has the Father; whoever acknowledges the Son has the Father also.^(AO)

²⁴ As for you, see that what you have heard from the beginning^(AP) remains in you. If it does, you also will remain in the Son and in the Father.^{(AQ) 25} And this is what he promised us—eternal life.^(AR)

²⁶ I am writing these things to you about those who are trying to lead you astray.^{(AS) 27} As for you, the anointing^(AT) you received from him remains in you, and you do not need anyone to teach you. But as his anointing teaches you about all things^(AU) and as that anointing is real, not counterfeit—just as it has taught you, remain in him.^(AV)

God’s Children and Sin

²⁸ And now, dear children,^(AW) continue in him, so that when he appears^(AX) we may be confident^(AY) and unashamed before him at his coming.^(AZ)

²⁹ If you know that he is righteous,^(BA) you know that everyone who does what is right has been born of him.^(BB)

Job

42 Then Job replied to the Lord:

Epilogue

⁷ After the Lord had said these things to Job^(K), he said to Eliphaz the Temanite, “I am angry with you and your two friends,^(L) because you have not spoken the truth about me, as my servant Job has.^{(M) 8} So now take seven bulls and seven rams^(N) and go to my servant Job^(O) and sacrifice a burnt offering^(P) for yourselves. My servant Job will pray for you, and I will accept his prayer^(Q) and not deal with you according to your folly.^(R) You have not spoken the truth about me, as my servant Job has.”^{(S) 9} So Eliphaz the Temanite, Bildad the Shuhite and Zophar the Naamathite^(T) did what the Lord told them; and the Lord accepted Job’s prayer.^(U)

¹⁰ After Job had prayed for his friends, the Lord restored his fortunes^(V) and gave him twice as much as he had before.^{(W) 11} All his brothers and sisters and everyone who had known him before^(X) came and ate with him in his house. They comforted and consoled him over all the trouble the Lord had brought on him,^(Y) and each one gave him a piece of silver^[a] and a gold ring.

¹² The Lord blessed the latter part of Job’s life more than the former part. He had fourteen thousand sheep, six thousand camels, a thousand yoke of oxen and a thousand donkeys. ¹³ And he also had seven sons and three daughters. ¹⁴ The first daughter he named Jemimah, the second Keziah and the third Keren-Happuch. ¹⁵ Nowhere in all the land were there found women as beautiful as Job’s daughters, and their father granted them an inheritance along with their brothers.

¹⁶ After this, Job lived a hundred and forty years; he saw his children and their children to the fourth generation. ¹⁷ And so Job died, an old man and full of years.^(Z)

Jesus Comes to Jerusalem as King^(A)(B)

11 As they approached Jerusalem and came to Bethphage and Bethany^(C) at the Mount of Olives,^(D) Jesus sent two of his disciples, ² saying to them, “Go to the village ahead of you, and just as you enter it, you will find a colt tied there, which no one has ever ridden.^(E) Untie it and bring it here. ³ If anyone asks you, ‘Why are you doing this?’ say, ‘The Lord needs it and will send it back here shortly.’”

⁴ They went and found a colt outside in the street, tied at a doorway.^(F) As they untied it, ⁵ some people standing there asked, “What are you doing, untying that colt?” ⁶ They answered as Jesus had told them to, and the people let them go. ⁷ When they brought the colt to Jesus and threw their cloaks over it, he sat on it. ⁸ Many people spread their cloaks on the road, while others spread branches they had cut in the fields. ⁹ Those who went ahead and those who followed shouted,

¹¹ Jesus entered Jerusalem and went into the temple courts. He looked around at everything, but since it was already late, he went out to Bethany with the Twelve.^(I)

Jesus Curses a Fig Tree and Clears the Temple Courts^(J)(K)(L)

¹² The next day as they were leaving Bethany, Jesus was hungry. ¹³ Seeing in the distance a fig tree in leaf, he went to find out if it had any fruit. When he reached it, he found nothing but leaves, because it was not the season for figs.^{(M) 14} Then he said to the tree, “May no one ever eat fruit from you again.” And his disciples heard him say it.

¹⁵ On reaching Jerusalem, Jesus entered the temple courts and began driving out those who were buying and selling there. He overturned the tables of the money changers and the benches of those selling doves, ¹⁶ and would not allow anyone to carry merchandise through the temple courts. ¹⁷ And as he taught them, he said, “Is it not written: ‘My house will be called a house of prayer for all nations’^[c]?^(N) But you have made it ‘a den of robbers.’^[d]”^(O)

¹⁸ The chief priests and the teachers of the law heard this and began looking for a way to kill him, for they feared him,^(P) because the whole crowd was amazed at his teaching.^(Q)

¹⁹ When evening came, Jesus and his disciples^[e] went out of the city.^(R)

²⁰ In the morning, as they went along, they saw the fig tree withered from the roots. ²¹ Peter remembered and said to Jesus, “Rabbi,^(S) look! The fig tree you cursed has withered!”

²² “Have faith in God,” Jesus answered. ²³ “Truly^[f] I tell you, if anyone says to this mountain, ‘Go, throw yourself into the sea,’ and does not doubt in their heart but believes that what they say will happen, it will be done for them.^{(T) 24} Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.^{(U) 25} And when you stand praying, if you hold anything against anyone, forgive them, so that your Father in heaven may forgive you your sins.”^{(V) [26] [g]}
